“My Sinjar Reflections” is a compilation of stories written by Yazidi survivors in the Sinjar District of Iraq, who have chosen to perform the dangerous task of clearing explosive hazards from their community. The book won the Best Book Design of the Year Award at the 41st Graphic Design Awards of Türkiye.
UNMAS Iraq has coordinated a gender-responsive approach that safeguards and integrates the need of women, men, girls, and boys into explosive hazard management activities, among which is the formation of its first mixed team of searchers in Iraq. Each of them brings their own unique story to their job. In this book, you will find excerpts of their stories.
Every element in the book is custom designed by our team; from the layout to the hand drawn cover artwork and maps (shoutout to the talented Paul F. Vanderberg).
Every design decision is made and every material is chosen with utmost care to respect and reflect the stories and the magnificent people behind it. Their original handwriting is gently placed behind their photos, inviting the reader to be a part of their experiences.
My Sinjar Reflections contains three languages within a single book, with English reading from left to right, Arabic from right to left, and Kurdish in the middle with a die cut on revealing the Kurdish star for increased visibility.
It’s our sincere wish that the design of this book showcases the power of these stories, and brings international attention to those who risk their lives to rebuild their community.
