Random firing of weapons, specifically celebratory gun fire, has been identified as a security and safety issue in Salah al-Din Governorate in Iraq. It is not commonly realized that when a bullet is fired in the air it will return back to the ground, and when it does it has the potential to cause damage, injury or death. This was decided to be addressed through an awareness campaign by Al Fajir and Al Kasbah CPFs.
IOM Iraq’s community policing project is a collaboration between community police officers, IOM and community members who are represented through a Community Policing Forum (CPF). CPFs are a cooperative community platform, established on the basis of an agreement between law enforcement, community and civil society. It is a mechanism that aims to prevent crime and protect the community.
We worked separately with the two CPFs and developed two different concepts, each with three posters. An illustration based concept for Al Fajir and a collage based concept for Al Kasbah. Each CPF shared three posters via social media. The idea was to spread awareness through a friendly competition between the two CPFs to see which one could get the most interaction.
